Abstract

This paper discusses parametric variation regarding scope rigidity. My proposal is that this parametric variation is reducible to the headedness. Specifically, under Fukui and Takano’s (1998) theory of phrase structure, I will propose a mechanism for the locality of Quantifier Raising. Furthermore, I will propose a hypothesis that the visibility of a maximal projection to CHL is determined by the visibility of its head. The theoretical consequence of the present analysis is that head movement takes place at narrow syntax, contrary to Chomsky (2000).
