Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the syntactic position of wh-in situ in Greek multiple questions. It is argued that non-fronted wh-elements in matrix multiple questions do not reside in situ, but move to a higher structural position. On the basis of the similarities between focus and wh-constructions, it is proposed that in situ wh-elements move to a low focus position at the left periphery of vP (cf. Belletti 2004). Hence, multiple questions are treated on a par with clause-internal focus constructions.
