Abstract

This paper argues that verb-verb compounding ellipsis (VVCE) is derived by ATB movement rather than verb stranding VP ellipsis, which confirms the view that verb stranding VP ellipsis does not exist in Japanese (Hoji 1998; Oku 1998; Tanaka 2023; Tanabe & Kobayashi 2024). It is pointed out that verb stranding VP ellipsis approach cannot capture the fact that extraction from VVCE is unavailable. By contrast, the impossibility of extraction from VVCE is dealt with by ATB movement approach in tandem with chain formation (Blumel ¨ 2017). As a consequence, the current approach supports adjunct ellipsis to derive adjunct inclusive reading in Japanese and correctly bans extraction from VP fronted in ATB fashion.
