Abstract

This paper deals with the syntax of exceptive constructions in Hill Mari and Moksha Mordvin. In Hill Mari the semantics of exception is conveyed by the construction 'gə̈c pasna' <EL separate>. In Moksha Mordvin it is conveyed by the construction '-də baška' <-ABL except>. In both languages exceptives can be adjacent to the quantifier phrase, forming a constituent (Connected Exceptive, CE) and at the periphery of the clause (Free Exceptive, FE). I claim that Hill Mari and Moksha Mordvin FEs are derived from CEs, since unreduced exceptive clauses and multiple exceptions are impossible, and the exception must be a NP.
