Abstract

This paper reports on an experimental study of principle C reconstruction in German ATBmovement. The results indicate that the previously reported asymmetry between the two conjuncts is due to distance between the referent and the pronoun. The findings suggest that principle C reconstruction is not suitable to probe into underlying syntactic structures, while prompting a discussion about experimental designs for coreference tasks. I hypothesize that binding phenomena in ATB-dependencies show different patterns due to their own nature, not some inherent trait of ATB-movement.
