Malayalam ParticipialsMorphological ConstructionsValuation of Features

Abstract

This paper analyses three different, though morphologically similar types of constructions, which employ the “participial” form of the verb, The participial marker -a is analysed as having the feature description [iҨ unvalued]. The differences between these constructions are traced to the differences in the strategies employed to value -a. Also, the possibility of an interpretable but unvalued feature surviving at the end of a derivation is explored as a logical possibility of the Pesetsky and Torrego (2004) system.
